If Deshaun Watson is given a one-year suspension, the fantasy of Baker Mayfield playing for the Browns in 2022 is a bad one.

Like the Goonies, some stories never say die. The most tenacious plotline we have seen since Mikey Walsh persisted in his quest to find One-Eyed Willy's treasure is the notion that Baker Mayfield will return and play for the Cleveland Browns in 2022.

People keep asking the same question since there is a growing belief that Deshaun Watson may be suspended for the entire year: Is there a chance that No. 6 will return?

On Sunday, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk raised the question once more. Florio questioned whether paying extra money in exchange for a promise that the tag won't be used in 2023 may assist, despite the fact that he stated it might be too late to make amends.

This theory has a flaw in that it would contradict everything that defines Mayfield as a person. The Heisman Trophy winner, who was a two-time walk-on, utilises outside uncertainty as motivation. Right, wrong, or indifferent. He also enjoys disproving those who doubted him.

Even with a greater salary, he won't put on the orange and brown uniform again for that reason alone. He would rather take a chance on joining a squad that wants him this year and showcasing his abilities in the hopes of earning more money in 2023.

The Browns, on the other hand, are certain to not want him back.

Without a doubt, Mayfield struggled with the team's locker room in 2021, and he and head coach Kevin Stefanski never really got along.

By signing Deshaun Watson, the Cleveland Browns made it apparent that Baker Mayfield is not part of their long-term plans. However, they effectively lost all of their negotiating power in the process.

In the end, Mayfield finds himself in a kind of NFL purgatory where no team wants him, the Browns don't want him, he doesn't want to play for them, and the Browns are unable to release him.

However, there are some supporters who are prepared to see their team make a trade for the former first-round pick. Will Baker Mayfield join the Seahawks and fulfill Rainn Wilson's wish?

In order for Mayfield to become accustomed to offensive coordinator Shane Waldron's scheme, Seattle should ideally sign him before the start of the season. However, Cleveland must also consent to a deal, and it is anticipated that as part of a trade, the Browns will pay a portion of the $18 million that Mayfield is due in 2022.
