lightning and rain stopped NASCAR Cup Series race

Nashville's NASCAR Cup Series race is stopped by lightning and rain.

Before heavy rain soaked the track, the Ally 400 was delayed by lightning strikes within an eight-mile radius of the track. Soon after 10 p.m. ET, racing resumed.

Every time lightning is seen within eight miles of the race course, a 30-minute stoppage is required. At lap 42, the race saw its first interruption. The race resumed when NASCAR issued the all-clear signal following several lightning strikes and a delay of just over an hour. Just over two hours passed during the second break.

Denny Hamlin has controlled the race and is still in front at the finish line. For 78 of the 139 completed laps, his No. 11 Toyota has led the pack. Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, and Christopher Bell, who are teammates with him at Joe Gibbs Racing, finish second, third, and fifth, respectively.

The midway point, which is Lap 150 in Nashville, is when the race is officially complete

After winning on Sunday night at Nashville Superspeedway, Chase Elliott will need to learn how to play the guitar.

The Ally 400, which presents a guitar trophy to celebrate the musical heritage of its host city, was everything from smooth. Nine cautions and two weather delays, the second of which lasted about two hours, were issued during the race, which was completed 6 1/2 hours after the green flag was raised.

After the restart at approximately 10:30 p.m. ET, there were no further substantial caution- or weather-related delays, much to the relief of the spectators who stuck around for the whole race. The key plotline that remained was whether pole-winner Denny Hamlin or Martin Truex Jr. would win after placing first and second in the first two stages, respectively.

After winning in Dover on May 1, Elliott ultimately prevailed in the final stage to capture his second victory in the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series. With less than 10 laps to go, Josh Bilicki's car's engine broke out, forcing a yellow that put Elliott at risk of losing his hard-earned lead.

Elliott never faced any serious danger as he led each of the four last laps after the restart, so his risk to stay on the track with worn tires paid off. Before the caution, Kyle Larson, who finished second, decided to take a chance and pit for new tires. He came in fourth.
