Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning was removed from Game 3 due to Devon Toews of the Colorado Avalanche's "dangerous play."

TAMPA — After what one teammate referred to as "a reckless play" by Colorado Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews, Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov departed Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final. Tampa Bay defeated the Avalanche 6-2 in the end, cutting Colorado's series lead to 2-1. Kucherov departed the game with 6:05 left in the third period.

Toews slammed Kucherov into the boards and along the ice as the Lightning winger was handling the puck, causing Kucherov to go to his knees.

After standing up, Kucherov briefly pursued Toews. After Toews was called for a cross-check and the accompanying power play was initiated, he did enter the game, but he quickly left for the Lightning's locker room. Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman described it as "one of those plays you don't want to witness." "It's a risky play. You should never see that. We'll watch to see if anything occurs; most likely not. However, it's a risky play."

Around two minutes had passed since Kucherov's hit on Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson at the end boards, which might have resulted in a penalty, when Toews crossed the line. For Colorado, Manson clinched the victory.

Kucherov's condition has not changed, according to coach Jon Cooper.

When someone asks you a question like that, Cooper added, "you look for an answer that everyone in the building already knows." "This is a game. It is a physical game. But men are skilled in their trade. Players that are shrewd and intelligent know how to use their sticks. We all noticed it."

With seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points in 20 games, Kucherov leads the Lightning in postseason scoring. In the victory in Game 3, he recorded two assists.
